About the research

How much electromagnetic energy do people absorb from 5G and future 6G networks? These networks use higher frequencies and more antennas than previous generations. Assessing exposure requires calculations at very different scales: from radio waves traveling through a city to the thin layer of skin where much of their energy is absorbed at higher frequencies.

This dissertation develops computational methods across all those scales. Detailed simulations calculate absorption in digital human models, including adults and children, but can take hours per calculation. Combining models of wireless propagation with faster mathematical models of absorption makes it possible to assess exposure across ten cities in five minutes.

In the realistic scenarios studied, exposure remains well below international limits. Networks with distributed antennas also produce lower peak exposure than networks with a few large antenna arrays. The methods support safety assessment, network design, and epidemiological research.
